Forward Deployed Engineer — the AI role that wires models into messy companies
50k ft — Why care?
Explains the Forward Deployed Engineer role, pioneered by Palantir and now heavily hired at OpenAI and Anthropic: engineers embedded at client companies who connect AI products to legacy databases, messy data and compliance constraints. The argument is enterprise AI fails at integration, not at the model.
10k ft — Key takeaways
• Enterprise AI usually breaks at legacy integration and security, not model quality
• FDE suits full-stack engineers who like client-facing problem solving

OpenAI
enterprise AI integration, workflow automation

Transcript excerpt
The hardest job in AI that nobody is talking about is no longer the prompt engineer or even the AI engineer. It's called the Forward Deployed Engineer, and balance your basically invented it over a decade ago. But now the corporate push for AI is making it explode and companies like OpenAI and Thropic are just hiring for it like crazy. So here's what they actually do. Instead of sitting behind a computer and building a feature or building a product, FDE is basically working the field. They are embedded directly in a client's company, and they become the bridge between the AI product and how the company actually runs day-to-day. They identify opportunities and blockers in things like a company's workflow, legacy infrastructure, messy data, and create seamless integrations, automated pipelines, secure and compliance setups. That's still part of this whole AI boom that nobody's really talking about, and a price AI doesn't fail because the model is bad. It fails because connecting it to a 15-year-old database with weird security constraints, a ton of undocumented stuff requires one specialized human, and that is the FDE. So, if you're full stack, you like working with people, problem-solving, and want to be in the AI space, this might be for you.
