50k ft — Why care?

Xiaomi showed a prototype AI Cube with 80GB unified memory running 3B and 120B models on-device, built on three in-house chips: XRING O3 (mobile), O100 AI accelerator (claimed 1.22 TB/s near-memory bandwidth) and D100 3nm driving chip. No price, release date or independent benchmarks yet.

10k ft — Key takeaways

• Prototype only; wait for benchmarks. • Unified memory size is the key spec for running large models locally. • Xiaomi is vertically integrating chips across phones, cars and AI.

Xiaomi just showed an Al Cube prototype with 80GB of unified memory running a 120-billion-parameter model locally. The wild part: Xiaomi designed the chips inside it too. The ring 03 comes from its mobile devices. The 0100 is built for Al and Xiaomi says it reaches 1.22 TB/s of near-memory bandwidth. The D100 was designed for intelligent driving. So Xiaomi is now designing chips for phones, cars, and Al, then combining them inside entirely new kinds of computers. The Cube is still a prototype… But the real story is starting to look a lot bigger than one little box. #Xiaomi #AI #ChinaTech #MacMini #GigaQian
Transcript excerpt
Apple just announced its new Mac Mini, but Xiaomi just showed a computer with more unified memory that can run a 120 billion parameter AI model locally. And one of the chips inside it was originally built for a car. I'm Giga Chen, I do business in China, and I like to share the information you're less likely to hear, because this could mean a different future for personal computers. This is the Xiaomi AI Cube, and the computer itself might be the least interesting part. The brand new M6 Mac Mini tops out at about 32 gigabytes of unified memory. The more powerful M5 Pro version goes up to 64. Those are good numbers, but Xiaomi put 80 gigabytes inside their prototype. They say they've already deployed two AI models directly on the machine. One has 3 billion parameters, the other 120 billion. We're talking strong performance without sending every request to a giant data center somewhere. Here's where this gets really interesting. Xiaomi built the computer around three chips it designed itself. The X-Ring 03 is its new flagship processor for mobile devices. The O100 is a high bandwidth chip built specifically to accelerate AI. And the D100 is a 3 nanometer AI chip designed for intelligent driving. So you've got a phone chip, an AI chip, and a car chip all inside the same computer. But it's still a prototype. No price, no release date. No independent benchmarks. We kind of need those. But if you've been listening closely, there's a story in here bigger than the AI cube. Xiaomi…
