GothamQ — metro-scale quantum network over commercial NYC fiber
50k ft — Why care?
NYU's Center for Quantum Information Physics, Qunnect and Cisco ran a three-node hub-and-spoke quantum network over ordinary commercial fiber between Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Entanglement swapping happened at the hub, the endpoints ran at room temperature, and automatic polarization controllers made up for vibration and temperature drift. It's an explainer for a real research result.
10k ft — Key takeaways
• A quantum LAN is a realistic step toward a quantum internet.
• Automatic polarization controllers make up for drift from vibration and temperature.
• Entanglement swapping already works over noisy commercial urban fiber.

We are way closer to a quantum internet than you think we are. In fact, there's something beneath New York City that you probably don't know about, and it's going to blow your mind. I'm Giga Chen, and I like to make sure my followers are way ahead of everyone else, because knowing what's coming is half the battle. There's something beneath New York City, and it's called Gotham Q. It's a prototype quantum internet test bed, and it might be a lot crazier than it sounds. If you've been with me for a while, you know one of the general prerequisites for quantum computing is pristine lab conditions. It doesn't really bring to mind New York's chaotic underground infrastructure. Let alone the pre-existing commercial telecom fiber found down there. But that's what they used. Who's they? Researchers from NYU Center for Quantum Information Physics, Quantum Startup Connect with a QU, and Cisco. And yeah, they demonstrated the first metro scale quantum network over commercial fiber. I'm going to say this again. They used commercial infrastructure. That means it's subject to vibrations, temperature swings, pressure changes, so how is it even possible? First, you should know that they used three nodes. Then implemented a hub and spoke architecture. The spokes in Brooklyn sent entangled photons five to six miles into QTD systems data center in Lower Manhattan. At the hub, they performed entanglement swapping, which is nuts. This is when two particles that never interacted directly become…
