50k ft — Why care?

A DuckStation fork with a 3D-screenshot feature dumps the current PS1 scene as an OBJ with positions intact, ready to drag into Blender. More reliable than the older Avocado emulator route, which had vertex and texture bugs. The creator turns rips into papercraft models.

Turns out you can extract 3D models from almost any PS1 game using nothing more than a 3D screenshot. In this reel, I’ll show you how it works and why it’s such a fun way to preserve and explore retro games. Sou will need special version of duckstation with the 3D screenshot. You can find on github. Previously it worked only with Avocado ps1 emulator. But there was problems with vertices and textures. This duckstation version is flawless! What’s the first PS1 game you’d rip a model from? 👇 #PS1 #PlayStation #RetroGaming #GameDev
Transcript excerpt
I can rip any 3D model of a PS1 game. I can show you here. This is called 3D screenshot and I can take a screenshot here of this scene and directly it grabs this into the folders screenshot 3D. I will find the proper folder and the last OBJ file I can drag and drop into the blender and here is the 3D model. You can see it grabbed also the position of the 3D model in the scene and the moment I grab it. What I can do also, I turn this model into the paper model so I can build it and now here I am already building my PS1 Gundam. So now I can extract every single model of a PS1 game.
