Hans Zimmer is one of the most important film composers of our time, known for movies like The Lion King, Gladiator, Inception, Interstellar, and Dune. His music stands out because it mixes classic orchestra sounds with modern, electronic elements, creating a unique style that feels powerful and emotional.
Instead of starting with a melody, Zimmer often begins with a simple question: why is there music in this scene? This helps him focus on the story first. My music is not original. My music comes, it's a subtotal of everything I've had all my life. The job is not to listen to the director, telling you what the music is he wants. Because if he knows what music he wants, then he can do it himself. My job is to sort of listen to him, tell me the story, and then do the thing that he can't even imagine. So that's the job. I try to avoid reading the script. Not because I am against great screenplays, but because I want to know what's in the director's hand. So what I usually do is I either come here or we go out for dinner and there's usually a good bottle of wine involved. And I say, so tell me the story. Because then I know what is important to him in the story. He'll leave out all that stuff that is secondary. And I get a sense of the tone somehow. And tone can mean two things in this case. And it can mean that even the light, how he's going to light the thing, and how he's going to be light. And that has to sort of match up with what I'm writing and the sounds I'm using and the orchestration, etc.
