Nvidia closed-loop cooling — why it grows demand for chillers

50k ft — Why care?

Nvidia's Rubin closed-loop liquid cooling removes evaporative water use but still needs chillers, heat exchangers, dry coolers and liquid cooling units. Modine (MOD), via its Airedale subsidiary, hit $1.1B data center revenue (+73%) and got $165M upfront from a hyperscaler. Read the engineering, not the headline sell-off.

• Check order books before reacting to headline-driven sell-offs • Waterless cooling shifts spend to more cooling hardware, not less

Follow me @natestav for more. Nvidia announced new liquid cooling for its next-gen chips. Headlines said data centers won’t need water anymore. Cooling stocks sold off. One problem - the system still needs chillers, heat exchangers, and high-density liquid cooling units. It just recycles coolant instead of evaporating water. Modine Manufacturing makes exactly that equipment. Their data center revenue just hit $1.1B. A hyperscaler just gave them $165M upfront to expand capacity. Read the order books, not the headlines. I’m not a financial advisor and I’m not telling you to buy anything. Hate the market with me.
Transcript excerpt
Yesterday, Nvidia announced their new data AI centers don't need water for cooling anymore. The headlines went wild, the HVAC and cooling stocks dropped, most of financial media moved on by lunch. The engineers are reading the actual press release left, because Nvidia didn't eliminate cooling. They eliminated one specific type of it and replaced it with something that needs more of a completely different kind of equipment. So let me show you what's actually happening, and the company is sitting on a $4 billion order book that proves it. I'm Nate, I dig in the moves that people at the top are making, because almost every time a tech headline triggers a stock sell-off, somebody is misreading the engineering. So here's what Nvidia actually announced. Their next-generation AI chips, the Rubin series, run on a closed-loop liquid cooling system. The coolant is recycled. It's filled once and runs in the loop for the life of the facility. That part of the announcement is real, and it's genuinely a meaningful environmental improvement. We can all celebrate it. Nvidia's chief sustainability officer told Axios the water consumption challenge for data centers is, quote, largely solved. Well, we'll see. Here's what the headlines missed. Eliminating evaporative water cooling does not eliminate cooling. It shifts cooling from one approach to another. The new design requires high-capacity liquid cooling units, heat exchangers, dry coolers, chillers, and pretty complex fluid management…
