So today I want to show you a really simple negative space technique that I use all the time I begin with a ballpoint pen drawing and then I put down a layer of colored ink to serve as a mid-tone and Then I begin painting into the negative space around the tree with white gouache and then once I'm finished with the negative space I just go into the deepest darkest shadows with a little bit of black ink and And I let the color of the ink in the background serve as my mid-tone so mostly I don't really touch it at all And I made this whole series of paintings as illustrations for One of my favorite books of the last decade the hidden life of trees for the folio society, so yeah check it out if you want
