The clip is from Streetwise, featuring a kid who goes by the name Rat. He finds escape from his life on the streets by diving off bridges into water for kicks.
When I first watched Streetwise I had to check a few times that it was real. The cinematography and the characters felt like they were straight out of a feature film.
The film follows a group of homeless and runaway kids living on the streets of Seattle in the 1980s. They sleep rough, hustle for money, drift through diners, bus stations and backstreets, doing things no teenager should ever have to do to survive.
I don’t know if I’ve ever watched another documentary quite like it. It left a really deep impression on me. It’s tragic, sometimes funny, sometimes full of life, but also just deeply unsettling and sad.
