Handheld hyperlapse of New York — in-camera transitions, After Effects edit
50k ft — Why care?
A New York hyperlapse built from thousands of handheld stills (shoot, step, shoot) over days of 15–25k steps, with every transition planned and executed while shooting, then assembled in After Effects.
10k ft — Key takeaways
• Design transitions on location so the edit is mostly assembly
• Expect thousands of frames per sequence — plan storage and stabilization
• Handheld hyperlapse: fix a target point, shoot, take a step, repeat
5k ft — Tools & techniques
After Effects
handheld hyperlapse, in-camera transitions
1k ft — Deep-dive / try it
Thousands of pictures for this… 🤯
A few weeks back I travelled to New York to create this hyperlapse edit. All the shots were created using the handheld hyperlapse technique. I shot I photo, walked a few steps, shot a photo and so on! Everyday I walked between 15-25k steps. The edit was put together inside of After Effects. All transitions were created while shooting.
