Hoffman's interface theory — perception as a desktop, not reality
50k ft — Why care?
Podcast clip on Donald Hoffman's evolutionary game theory result: agents that perceive more than fitness payoffs lose to agents tuned only to reward, so perception works like desktop icons that hide the underlying machinery. Spacetime as interface, not ground truth.
10k ft — Key takeaways
• Fitness-tuned perception beats truth-tuned perception in Hoffman's simulations
• Useful metaphor: UI icons correlate with function, not structure
5k ft — Tools & techniques

AI agents, evolutionary game theory

This is a fascinating idea in modern cognitive science.
Donald Hoffman has a theory that evolution did not shape us to perceive objective reality. Instead, it shaped us to perceive only the information necessary for survival- like the icons on a computer desktop that help us use a computer, but without revealing what is actually happening underneath.
We often think the idea of living in a simulation is the strangest thing. But the possibility that our perception of reality is fundamentally limited, and that reality itself may be far stranger than it appears, is already a wild thought.

Transcript excerpt
In fact, Donald Hoffman discovered that that he can show reliably, mathematically, that in any environment, if you allow an agent, from a game theory, evolutionary game theoretical perspective, if you allow any agent to be aware of more than just the reward functions, like the underpinnings of reality, in 100% of cases, which is crazy, 100% of cases, these agents will lose the evolutionary game to all the other agents who are only aware of reward functions. This told them that the chance if in order for us to still be here, what must be the case is that reality conspires to not only not show us the world for what it is fully, but it conspires to show us none of the world of what it really is. It's like all of this is basically like a desktop. That's it. It's just basically a way to allow whatever informational pattern you are to exist in whatever hyperspace it is by giving you this little movie that tells you about distance, time, perception, things like this. But none of this is what real reality looks like, not just in terms of like, this is not what quarks look like, but like it doesn't look like this at all. The example he uses is the computer, basically like a desktop, right? So like the what the folders on the desktop look like has nothing to do at all with what the underpinnings of the machinery is doing, logic gates and all of this has nothing to do with it, right? There's some correlation of function, but the function is not in the shape of what's happening under…
