Daniel de Bruin's LEDs in motor oil — light art from used-oil gradients
50k ft — Why care?
Light work from Daniel de Bruin (2019): LEDs submerged in used motor oil, which filters the light into a rich color gradient. He built three versions, but the oil degrades everything it touches, so the piece did not last and he has not found a substitute.
10k ft — Key takeaways
• Dark translucent liquids make natural LED gradient filters
• Used oil is corrosive; look for a stable substitute such as tinted mineral oil
5k ft — Tools & techniques

light diffusion through liquid

Putting LEDS into used motor oil is just magical!
A throwback to 2019 when I was experimenting with this process. I ended up making 3 versions of this work but this round version is my favorite. Sadly used motor oil is very intense on everything it touches so the work didn't last for long. I haven't got the time to find a good alternative unfortunately. Maybe I will in the future. The motor oil just gives it an amazing colour gradient.
